It's set in World War II, you know it won't end happily ever after, but this book just rolled on and on with joie de vivre and hope, silver hope like the 'spilt mercury' which is what the ocean looks like to Maddie's perspective when she's high in the air, flying to secret locations and unknown fate.

I can't repeat Schindler's List in the next eight years yet, but I've already reread this book twice.

It's stunning, heart-breaking and JUST. SO. RICH. Humanity is best viewed through the lens of danger and hardship. It's when humanity triumphs.
