This is one of the few mediocre books by Peter S. Beagle. After finishing it I wondered how anyone could write a book that only contained five main characters and mostly took place in a cemetery?

There is little to no action in this book; it is very heavy on character development and in fact is mostly carried on the shoulders of two ghosts, two living people, and a talking raven.

This is a good book for people who enjoy storytelling over action. It's a mellow book. I enjoyed it, but will not likely reread it in the future. I like a little more stuff happening in a book than what goes on in A Fine and Private Place .
