Cynthia Archer I just finished Canada by Richard Ford, and I have the feeling that it is a book that will continue to grow on me as time goes by. I did like it and appreciated the ability of the author to draw such a clear and detailed portrait of the life of Dell. In spite of that, he is a character that I didn't totally understand or relate to. For me, the best part of the book was the ending. Somehow it satisfied me as a fitting finish to the journey of this story. I was glad that there wasn't more to complicate things. I admired the ability of Dell to make something out of nothing in terms of his life. A more emotional or complicated man would not have done nearly as well. I guess the real message of the story is that things happen. and how we respond to them is our only choice. There were many different choices made by the characters in Canada, but Dell was the only one who weathered things well through a meekness that is rarely seen as successful. I do recommend this book as it has a lesson to share, but caution you to know from the start that it is not a particularly fun or comfortable read, but rather a very realist story about life, which can be hard.
