Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake gives insight into Anna Quinlen's life and thoughts. She gives us a look into her family, and we learn about her thoughts on her marriage and on motherhood. She shares about her mother's illness, taking on her care, and her subsequent death, all when Anna was only nineteen. The book reveals what it was like to be in the first generation of women to raise families while also managing careers. We also are given Anna's view of aging, and her perspective on life now that she has reached the point where she has more years behind her than ahead of her.

I thought that this book was thoughtful and interesting. I enjoyed learning more about Quinlen and what made her into the author she is today. The book was in turns poignant and humorous, and I loved the insight into her life and family. I received this book as an ARC through Netgalley.
