Damn this is a good book. In part that's because it's actually the latter half of one larger book, and so contains much of the action and reveals, whereas the one before was mostly plot progression and build up.

It's got all the Martin hallmarks: viciousness, realism, complexity, the right amount of drama, and a disregard for the tradition notion of a hero.

It also introduces far more fantastical elements into the plot than past entries. At first, that seems odd, as the series has been pretty realistic thus far, but you realise soon enough that it's meant to be weird to you, because it's bloody weird to the people of Westeros too, seeing as they've pretty much forgotten about it all.

So yeah, probably my second favourite of the series, after A Game of Thrones.
