Unexpectedly, the second book in this series is even better than the first, which I have not often found to be the case in any trilogy. Vanyel is now 28, twelve years have passed, and he is the strongest Herald in Valdemar. Yet he is besieged and beset by other people's problems and with no one but his Companion and a few friends to share the burden. There are some surprising twists and turns in his relationships with some of the characters from the first book and by the end your heart aches for his loneliness. Hopefully in the third book he will be able to find both surcease from his travails and peace, if not happiness.
