Classic novel, rather tattered old penguin version I got in Oxfam. Having never read it, but quoted the first paragraph to a constantly remorseful friend - "Chronic remorse, as all the moralists are agreed, is a most undesirable sentiment. If you behaved badly, repent, make what amends you can and address yourself to the task of behaving better next time. On no account brood over your wrongdoing. Rolling in the muck is not the best way of getting clean." So thought I should read the book! Found it pretty heavy going, not helped by the fact the pages were falling out! Gave up near the end. Afraid it will have to go to the paper bank!
