This wordless picture book is a Caldecott Award winner that would be appropriate for first to about third graders. It begins with a boy closely studying different creatures on the beach when all of a sudden a big wave knocks him over. The big wave washed an underwater camera onto the beach and the boy takes the film out to get it developed. One picture shows a school of red fish, with a mechanical wind-up fish, another picture shows a puff-fish being used as a hot air balloon, and another has aliens taking pictures of sea horses. The last picture is of a girl holding a picture of a boy who is holding a picture of a girl, etc. The boy looks at the picture through his magnifying glass and then uses his microscope. The images continue to show children from the past and the last picture shows a boy waving. The boy decides that he must continue the tradition and he takes a picture of himself holding the picture with the girl in it. A wave comes in and takes all of the pictures out t...more
