Comic and epic both, with some truly gorgeous passages and other truly gruesome ones. It reads like it was written in a furious rush; it reads like a first draft and yet also a finished product. It's odd, that: it's as if Johnson scribbled the book in an extended fit of inspiration, read it over later, and decided to keep it as it was, rough edges and all. Reading the novel, you see its many inconsistencies and imperfections, yet you respect the decision not to diminish its energy.
