Though I know this novel's job was neither to condemn or approve of the catholic church, it still bothered me. I couldn't really enjoy a book where I'm supposed to sympathize with even a STRUGGLING priest who hires "many many prostitutes" and regularly drives drunk. This is why the entire catholic church is hated by so many people - rather than a few perverted people who should NEVER have been put in a place of power, people assume half the priests are child molesters and father Dom is considered a less corrupt priest. Sorry, there are actually priests in the world who aren't amoral, narcissistic monsters.
