Gessen's depicts Putin as a person that people don't really know and if they only knew they would be afraid.

She claims he is autocratic, secretative and dangerous. We in the U.S. know little about him because our attention has been focused elsewhere. He grew up as a "street thug," was trained in the KGB and has gained power through the clever political manipulation by those engaged in a power struggle between financial Russian leaders.

The author, who now lives in the US, suggests that journalists who lost their lives in mysterious ways are among the victims of this ruthless leader.
