Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk

by Ben Fountain
Stylistically this was very well written. The book follows soldier Billy, and does so almost stream-of-consciencely while still maintaining third person perspective. I specifically liked the device he used whenever Billy heard someone going on about how they felt about the words. Just giving us the keywords in a free-floating pattern still gave us the gist of what the person was saying and what Billy thought about it. The author uses Billy's day at Texas Stadium to satirize and explore American attitudes on thoughts about the Iraq war. The characters were well drawn and believable (I particularly liked Dime). The only part of the story that took me out of it was Billy's relationship with Faison, the Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. I understand why the author put it in, but it still felt unreal and took me out of the story whenever it came up. The author, by the way, is a Dallasite, which is what initially got me interested in the book. His political views are very clear here, and he doesn't do much to hide it.
