Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin
I've read one other book by this Helprin - Freddy and Fredericka - which had some really hilarious parts. This book wasn't as funny (except for a scene involving a character named Jesse Honey, a catapult, shock pancakes, puffball suits, and the Yellowstone River) but I did like it. Some of the prose is really lovely.
