Reservation Blues takes characters Sherman Alexie builds on in his later books and uses music to demonstrate the challenges with succeeding within and outside of the reservation. The trio of Thomas Builds-a-Fire, Victor and Junior are interesting in their own ways. Why is Victor's behavior tolerated by so many on the reservation - more importantly why does Thomas accept the violence he gives him? All of the characters contribute to the story and give it meaning. Big Momma and Robert Johnson, the Flathead Indian sisters who the trio befriend, Betty and Veronica and the music executives. Alexie understands the pull and push of moving off the reservation to find success. The characters are so entertaining that the lives of these characters is less sad for how he portrays them.
