One of my favorite books of the semester, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indianby Sherman Alexie is both hilarious and deeply moving. Junior is a member of the Spokane Indian Tribe. After a teacher sees his potential, Junior breaks with the norm of the other people living on the reservation by deciding to go to the public school off the reservation. His diary documents his difficulties with fitting in at his new school, the decidedly negative reaction of his tribe to his decision, his life with his family, and his relationship with his best friend. Because he is an aspiring cartoonist, Junior also fills his diary with illustrations. The book shows a very unique American lifestyle in a very unique way. Recommended for ages 13 and up.
