Well-written, although the subject matter itself isn't always scintillating. Almost a survey course of American political history and intrigue in the twentieth and early twenty first centuries, which is of course exactly the framing this arcane and cabalistic subject required. It reinforced my understanding that while Hoover was alive, he was the FBI and the FBI was him. The most surprising learning for me was how little investigation / enforcement this police organization has indulged in over the decades, as compared to intelligence gathering. I like the focus on Robert Mueller's tenure at the end -- gives the book a lot of relevance and freshness.
