Uncut magazine describes this book as "surfer noir" and I suppose the noir part of it fits if you consider the sobering subject at the heart of this detective thriller. But most of the book is amusing and objective, and Winslow is one of those writers you just can't get enough of. I first read Winslow's books about part-time student/detective Neal Carey, and I've been hoping for another character in that vein of humor and style. With Boone Daniels, Winslow has done it again. This is a great story but you could be forgiven for overlooking the story because you enjoy the characters so much. Highly recommended for readers of detective, mystery and crime novels. Winslow is Charles-Willeford-good... and I don't say that too often about any writer.
