This was the first big Stephanie Plum novel disappointment for me. I'm not giving up on her - and it did get a little better in the last few chapters but something was definitely off in the writing for the bulk of the book. Usually the super-serious issues that our hero and her family encounter are handled in such a way that you simultaneously laugh your head off and worry deeply for their wellbeing. It's a rare and enjoyable combination which didn't come through at all in Seven Up. In this one it felt like we were just laughing at other peoples' misfortunes and trying to avoid any personal responsibility toward them. I also got really bored with the sex language overkill which made the normally suave characters sound like adolecents.

It seems like with this book Evanovich attempted to pump out her normal formula without taking time to add the finesse required to make it work like the first 6 books. Or there could be deeper philosophical reasons for my disappointment too (an increasing worldview divergence?) but that's not a brain-candy book review topic!

Still pretty excited about reading the next one...
