Bitter Greens is a good historical read with a touch of magic thrown in also. The story has three threads as we follow Charlotte-Rose de la Force, Margherita and Selena Leonelli – and although masterfully written I did have to struggle through the parts of Charlotte-Rose . There was a lot of jumping around for eg 10 years here, 40 years there and 100 years at other times which I found a little confusing when picking up the book in intervals to read. I would recommend devouring it over a weekend or such to keep up with it. I loved the telling of Rapunzel – it’s just beautiful and enchanting and the story of the witch was really well done. There was a LOT of information that took place in seventeenth century France thrown in that did take a bit of wading through…..But in saying that Forsyth does have a special gift of writing and ultimately this is a well researched and intriguing tale.
