Disclaimer: I received this book as a Goodreads first reads giveaway.
I am surprised that such a short book could convey so much depth of culture and character. The story is of a 12-year-old girl named Lanesha who lives through Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans' Ninth Ward. You can feel the mounting tension and fear, and even though everyone knows what the eventual outcome of the storm will be, the story is very compelling and urges you onward. The book also shows some of the reasons why some people did not, or could not, evacuate the area. There is some supernatural elements and talk of ghosts, but I found that it made the book more interesting.
