I listened on a CD, which may have been a mistake. The little 8 year-old girl sounded like an old grandma with her deep raspy voice. Yes, she had smoke inhalation problems in the fire, but really, a higher tone would have been believable for a child. This was about a mother making a difficult choice and dealing with the community's over-the-top cruelty. This probably would have ranked two stars, and stayed there; the writing is pretty awful and the situations stereotypical. Then the investigation into the cause of the fire was started on some pretty flimsy and unbelievably imaginative thinking on the mother's part. What if this fire was set on purpose? Then the book moves away from the bullying to deal with the mystery and the bullying people become best friends of the girl and her mother. It was too much to swallow, wandered wildly, and the CD reader was horrible.
