Jenny Schmenny's review
Free For All: Oddballs, Geeks, and Gangstas in the Public Library by Don Borchert
First of all, that's a pretty funny title. Also, I love libraries, and librarians. Borchert's a funny one, too, surly and idealistic. The book's simple, nothing particularly linear other than the author's nervous trudge away from crap jobs and into a steady gig at the library. Each chapter handles a different element; library romance, bad kids, bureaucracy, good kids with bad parents, crazies (both good and bad), cops, ideology, and minutiae of a librarian's daily life.
