This book was just as good as I thought it would be. I ADORE Elizabeth Bear, and this is her creation into a truly epic fantasy setting. It's been termed "Silk Road fantasy" for its setting in a pseudo-continental Asia. It is most definitely not our Earth, though, because you can tell which empire rules over a particular geographic location by which sky appears above it, each with their own suns and moons. This book mostly sets up the setting and the characters, and is just starting to get the real epic rolling, so it's not a stand-alone book, but it's a great beginning to a series. I can't wait for more.
