An intriguing look at one of the life of Lavinia "Vinnie" Warren, a celebrated dwarf who performed (along with her husband, General Tom Thumb) for Mr. Barnum. While I was captivated by the events of Vinnie's life, her self-absorption became quite wearing by the end of the novel. As for the romantic elements--she greatly (and rightly) feared physical intimacy, but longed for a connection of minds and souls with Mr. Barnum. He was the only person who understood her longing to be someone more than what she appeared.
