Kinda missed it on this one. Although technically superior writing, the story felt like Mr. Irving spent a summer taking notes in "homogenized gay stereotypes and behaviors 101" For such a clever and eloquent author I was quite disappointed. I would suggest "Middlesex" for a much better take on the transgender character. For well thought out stories about growing up gay and surviving try "Blue Boy" (Satyal) or "America's Boy" (Rouse). And for really good Irving try "Widow..", "son of circus", "...Garp", or "Prayer for Owen Meany".
