A Tale Dark and Grimm follows the (mis)adventures of Hansel and Gretel. Many, myself included, know the story of Hansel and Gretel traipsing through the forest and eating from, and be captured by, the witch who in turn decides to cook them. That is merely a chapter in this book full of adventure, dragon slaying, and (PG rated) gore.
This book didn't do too much for me. I was a bit bored throughout and found myself rushing through it just to complete it. However, I will say that this will be a good sell in the summer when students come for their summer reading book. I think that the familiarity of the characters, as well as the generous scenes of action and violence, will appeal to many - especially boys.
While it was not my favorite read, I will definitely pass it along to both eager, and reluctant, readers.
