really liked it
bookshelves: fantasy, ya
Read in September, 2008

I gave it four stars, because I didn't think there was anything wrong with it, but I certainly wasn't as engaged as I was with Incarceron. The idea of the prison itself remained fascinating, and I did want to know what happened to the characters, but I felt less than thrilled about the pattern of alternating between the scenes Inside and Outside, getting shorter and shorter as things got tenser. Add to that a sense that the set of Companions (to use a Tough Guide term) were more than a bit familiar from her other books and it became oddly repetitive for such a strikingly original pair of books. To me. The ending was -- well, satisfying with respect to the plot, but quite unsatisfying with respect to the characters' emotional relationships. I've heard there is to be no sequel to this sequel though...
