When I finished reading the first book in this series, Uglies, I thought that I kind of knew where the second book would go. In Uglies, people lived in a world where plastic surgery had gone to the extreme, and the main character, Tally Youngblood, for various reasons, had escaped the city and the surgery and came to live in the Smoke, where people lived in the wild, as in the old days. Wanting to cure those who by undergoing the surgery had become pretty-minded, just empty shells of themselves, Tally offered to become pretty. Pretties opened with Tally waking up to another 'pretty' day. But then it seemed to me to take a long time before she realized just how serious it was to cure the 'prettiness' that had settled over people's brains. Then she met another love interest. The guy that she had fallen in love with in Uglies was just completely out of the picture. Then the story went in a totally opposite direction. Not that I want a book to be predictable, but it just seemed to go all over the place. At the end of the book, Tally is forced to become 'special.' So, I will have to read that one now, to find out how she overcomes that!
