Kinsey Millhone, the detective in these alphabet mysteries, is prosaic and tough. Unlike many mysteries, she has no sidekick to help her. She goes it on her own. When Sue Grafton wrote the first mystery in the 80's it was set in that time. Now we are in 2012, but the mysteries are still set back in the 80's. For that reason, they almost read as historical mysteries now. Whereas now one would do a Google Search to find out information on someone, Kinsey has to go to the library and look in the city directory. There are no cell phones, and she has to type up reports of her cases on a typewriter, using carbon paper to make duplicates! It's amazing how much life has changed since then!
