This story was gripping from the beginning. The characters and the situations were very interesting, and there were many things about China in the late 1930's that I did not know. The information about the Chinese experience in the U.S. was very reminiscent of conversations I have had in the past with a friend. She had explained so many things, and the characters in the book experienced the very treatment and problems my friend had described. The ending was bittersweet, containing both sorrow and hope.
