Oh, man. What a period piece. I am inspired that Tom Clancy did all the research for this, according to the biography in the back of my copy of this book, while working full time as an insurance agent. He did do A LOT of research. And subs are really complicated. And the Russians are just like us, except when they're not. Freedom is the opposite of communism. If you're going to build complex war machines and teach people to run them, they need to have some fun terrorizing other people in other complex war machines and saber-rattling anybody who can be saber-rattled. Spoiler alert. I actually found the end scene with the Russian sub trying to destroy the Red October fairly tense and exciting, even though I was pretty sure the Jack Ryan and the rest would live. I think I get it now, so no more Clancy for me.
