I thought this story was moving and well told. It was easy to feel connected to each of the characters and the historical background was enlightening. I have to admit that I know very little of the time and place where the book is set, but I thought it was mostly believable. I thought it was strange that there was such an emphasis on "magic" although by the end it came across more as uncommon knowledge than magic. It also struck me as strange that single mothers were so easily accepted by the community, without the common and severe punishments that usually accompanied adultery or sex outside of marriage at that time. By the end of the book I had a hard time putting it down, and I thought it ended really well, especially when I found out that it was based on a true story.
