I love Stewart O'Nan's novels but this book is odd. He says at the beginning, "I did not want to write this book. Why I attempted it I'm not precisely sure." The writing is not quite journalism and not quite prose. At times, the author's voice is too intrusive as in this line: "Goodrow was methodical, a plodder, a meat-and-potatoes guy, just the facts, ma'am." If that kind of writing works for you, you might like this book better than I did. I was intrigued by the story but it just felt too scattered.
