And now the successful novelist is creatively paralyzed by pain for which an array of doctors can find no cause. The trilogy collected (along with the following novella) in the Library of America's fourth volume presents us with a not-exactly-Roth who couldn't have been created by anyone else. Not a very nice man, not a very generous man, but certainly a man who can never be accused of living the unexamined life. And if the life itself may often be tedious (certainly he finds it so--so much so that the pain he endures here inspires him to pursue a laughably quixotic life change), the examination of it never is.
