really liked it

Read in October, 2001

I had read Beowulf twice before this Seamus Heaney translation was published and found the poem boring and way too long. But Heaney has done a marvelous job of translating the immediacy of the poem, which is pretty essential in a knight vs. monster epic. Beowulf is represented as the courageous hero, but he's still human. Grendel and Grendel's mother constitute a nemesis worthy of the hero.
