Little Nell's grandfather's gambling habit attracts a crew of shady characters to the Old Curiosity Shop, which the grandfather has run since had had to start earning an income. These shady characters, Quilp, his lawyer Sampson Brass, and Sampson's sister Sally, soon make life intolerable for the pair, so they leave their home to become beggars. The storyline also follows Kit Nubbles, friend of Nells, and Richard Swiveller, a most charming and comic character. Little Nell is reminiscent of Evangeline from Uncle Tom's Cabin.
