really liked it
bookshelves: young-adult, children

First off, I feel my library has this classified incorrectly. I would not call this a young adult novel; most young adults would be instantly turned on by the fact that the protagonist is entering 5th grade. It also reminds me of Firegirl, by Tony Abbot. That being said, I still gave it four stars.

Kids can be cruel and middle schoolers can be the worst. August's extreme facial deformities make middle school (and his first public school experience ever) even more challenging. August and his family, the students (both good and bad and those who fool adults), teachers and administrators are all written true to life and the book is testament to "always try to be a little kinder than necessary".

I would recommend this book highly. Unfortunately, I felt the ending was just a little too predictable. While I love happy endings and felt the book was very well written, this ending tied everything up just a little too neatly for me.
