This is a place holder review: this book could have been much better had it not been overtaken by manic depression. Eugenides' narrative is consumed by a condition that flattens the entire experience and makes all of the characters unsympathetic and more than painful to read. This is potentially the point that he was trying to communicate, but if you have to compromise your "Novel" (for this is the book that brought back the Novel with a capital N, according to the promo materials) to make your point, you are rewarded for good intentions but are reprimanded for letting your reader suffer.
