Remember how when you re-read Catcher in the Rye as an adult, and you realized how insufferable Holden Caulfield is? Lev Grossman forgot that lesson when crafting his protagonist, apparently.

Aside from that, there's pretty much no development (or even starting point, really--they're ciphers) of any of the secondary characters. Worse still, reading the book at times feels like you're reading a sparknotes version of the plot. "And then this happened, and then this happened, and then this happened." Repeat.
