Lucy Patterson promises her dying mother that she will go to live with her aunt and uncle whom she has never met, and from that point on, she is plunged into a series of alarming, sickening and depressing experiences that make her contemplate suicide more than once. The river is like a character in this novel, beckoning her to throw herself in one minute and supporting her hopes the next. I must admit that I found the perpetual spiral downwards rather bleak at times, and there was little to make the reading experience an enjoyable one. However, the ending is eminently satisfying, if a little predictable.
