Having visited the Dominican Republic and having seen firsthand the kind of desolation that has resulted from years of dictatorships and corrupt governments made reading a personal account of the history especially pungent to read. Viewed through the eyes of an innocent child and how the war effected her family specifically really made me think about how much children see in our world and how things can affect them. Also interesting is seeing how the United States had an impact on the Dominican Republic, the views of the people there and how the US government intervened and assisted the people during such a terrible time. There were moments of deep insight, terror, humor and understanding in this amazing account of a families attempt to survive and live in difficult times.

Scale of 1-10
Violence: 3-4 (references to war crimes, torture and killing)
Sex: 1 (Mild, reference to dictator taking young girls captive)
Language: 0
Alcohol: 0
Drugs: 0
