The Arcadia Bell series gets even more solid with this second book. The world-building is fresh and exciting, the action gripping and no-stop, and the building romance "right" (as in perfectly right-paced).

Then there's the story: absolutely engaging, even if the plot has two problems (one is to me a proper hole):

-Arcadia is a witch. There's no logical reason to ask her to investigate a possible kidnapper turned serial killer. She is powerful, but as a magic user. The foundation is a bit shaky...But still acceptable. On the other side...

-..the blackmail is utterly illogical. She is not running from the law, she is not running for her life. What's at stake? Why is she not fighting it, but actually thinking about it? Honestly, it just seems a big deus ex machina to set the next book.

If I could (and did) overlook the why of her involvement in the investigation, as she would have done it anyway given Jupe, the blackmailing affair kept nagging at me marring a bit the after-taste of this novel.
