Years after a young, unwed mother gives up her infant son for adoption, her younger son finds him and insinuates himself into his life. The characters in this novel are all damaged: the younger son by a vicious dog and his mother's chronic depression; the older by his own minor drug-dealing. This all plays out in small midwestern towns. Some of the writing is terrific--I particularly loved a long passage describing the body of a beloved dog. But the plot lacks a certain narrative pull and the back-and-forth time sequences become confusing.
