Minor spoiler alert! I enjoyed this book more than I liked it. Well paced, engaging story, likeable enough hero, tastefully overdone symbolism. But the characters were all painfully two-dimensional; only Jacob's voice sounded real at all and even he couldn't decide whether to be a milquetoast or a superhero (crawling over the tops of boxcars with a concussion and a knife between his teeth to boot... indeed). Actually, now that I think about it, the elephant had more personality than anyone else in the book. Also had a hard time with how neatly everything got tied up at the end -- "old" Jacob's fate was particularly fabulous (in the literal sense). That said, I just sucked the whole thing down like a milkshake in the summertime. Enjoyable fluff.
