Taut novella less about a love triangle, but of people crawling to get out of the skin they're in and explore others', at any cost: voyeurism, sexual betrayal, self-mutilation, animal abuse, and fantasy. It really packs a wollop. The little-discussed screen adaptation with Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor, directed by John Huston, is spot on, capturing the Southern surreality of McCullers text in a dream-like sepia tone.
