Rather than a story, Cannery Row is a series of stories featuring a series of characters that blend together into a picture of life in the 1930's in California. As you read this, you realize why Steinbeck is a master story teller, the characters are not complicated, but they are believable. The book is by turns funny, sad, poignant and uplifting. It centers on the cannery district of San Francisco and people who are all different, yet the same in that they need each other to keep the neighborhood from sinking deeper into despair.
