bookshelves: roser_top-25

Book type: Picture storybook (wordless)
Intended audience: This would appeal to preschool and Kindergarten students who are interested in New York City. It would also appeal to anyone interested in adventures, exploring, or things in the air.

I really like David Wesiner, and so had to include one here. I thought of Tuesday, because the illustrations in that are so vivid and realistic and the attention to detail is amazing, especially in the grandmother's living room. I also considered Flotsam, because I like the calm, underwater dreamlike quality to it. June 29, 1999 is a good one, and would be useful if introducing a science fair project. And Three Little Pigs is a visual standout, but seems almost old fashioned when compared to Sciezka's retelling of the same tale. Hurricane is a great idea for a story, and I wish there were more, but the illustrations in that fall flat. I chose Sector 7 (1999), which is virtually wordless, because I was interested in the wordless picture book. This is one of the best illustrators, so his images stand on their own. The book is a wordless picture book that could be used with young students to help them understand all sort of things, such as the urban environment, weather, flying, and more.

Illustration:
The oil paintings in Sector 7, a Caldecott Winner, is as good as those created by Kadir Nelson. Wiesner is often used in college art courses to show how to pay attention to visual details, and how to create surreal art.

Note: According to the author's note, Weisner went to the Empire State Building on a zero visibility day to do his research and he was the only person there.

Potential for kids across setting (gives evidence of intertextual and cross-curricular applications:
--Math: height of Empire State Building
--History: New York City
--Science: Clouds, types of clouds, weather
--Science: flying

Book Pairing:
--Other Wiesner books that take place in the air: Tuesday, for instance
