** spoiler alert ** Technically speaking, this is probably a better book than its predecessor, SANDMAN SLIM, but I just didn't love it the way I loved that book. A lot of that has to do with choices the author made in plot and character development. They weren't incorrect choices; they just weren't what I wanted. I would have preferred more of a status quo and a Lucifer with a little more job satisfaction. I'm disappointed in the way Marshal Wells and Dr. Kinski ended up. And the porn star/Buffy the Zombie Slayer who makes men's dicks hard with just a smile sure did remind me that this series is written by a man. I'm much more troubled by the way women are portrayed than I was in the last book.

Really, the biggest problem is that there's too much story in too little space, leading to rushed characterization and plot. Had this story been told over two books, I think a lot of my issues with it would have been smoothed out. I was hoping for more with the supporting characters I loved in SANDMAN SLIM, and I was largely disappointed. Muninn, Carlos and especially Kasabian were still great. I love Stark's evolving friendship with Kasabian.

The final scene of the book is compelling, and the image of Stark sitting in the dark, lighting a cigarette off of his fiery, angelic sword and waiting for the Kissi to find him is one that's going to stick with me for a long time. I'll definitely continue reading this series with all kinds of joy and glee, though with maybe a little less investment.
