This was my first Haldeman book, after having him recommended to me by a sci-fi loving friend. This one was bound to suck me in, with its older-teen protagonist narrating her and her family's trip to join the first-ever colony on Mars. The narrator is engaging even before she goes out for a walk on Mars's surface (in spacesuit, of course), gets injured, and is rescued by an odd-looking "angel" with a message for her: We were here first. I confess something about the ending didn't quite gel for me (maybe it was too fast, or maybe I was hoping for something more epic?), but the last paragraph made me grin quite hugely, a la Pratchett's "Thief of Time," and you can't often ask for more than that. Definitely worth a read.
