Jon Van This wonderful book tells the story of all of us men who lived our childhoods in the 50s and our teen years in the 60s. It is told so powerfully that I had to read it twice. I lived this life, as did my boyhood friends and I have never seen it portrayed effectively until this book by Mark Kurlansky. Most readers are too young to know the anguish and angst of waiting for your draft number to be called and be sent, against your will and conscience, to a strange country to be maimed or killed, and be forced to maim and kill others. Brilliantly done.

Jon Van Marvelous, warm, upsetting, detailed look at growing up American in the 50's and 60's with wonderful characters, each fleshed out to the best of this detailed, skillful writer.
